While they’re known for being some of the most well-known stars today, these celebs have never shied away from taking public transportation.
Celebrities are known for their glamorous lifestyles: huge Beverly Hills mansions, super-expensive sports cars, wild parties nights, and limousine rides. It’s nearly impossible to find a celeb in the middle of a busy transportation mode meant for the general public, because, after all, why would they bother jostling through a crowd of people when they could easily just drive or be driven anywhere comfortably?
However, these celebs are exceptions. While they’re also known for being some of the best celebs today, they’ve never shied away from taking a means of public transport. From Jessica Alba to Mariah Carey, we’re rounding up some of the celebs who take public transportation.
10 Jessica Alba
Golden Globe-nominated actress Jessica Alba began her career in her teenage years. Over time, she’s become Hollywood’s richest businesswoman, especially when her Honest Company consumer goods business was valued at around $1 billion in 2014 by Forbes. However, that doesn’t stop her from taking public trains. In fact, Alba and her husband, Cash Warren, were spotted several times taking their kids for a ride at the New York subway too.
Jay-Z may arguably be one of the best rappers to ever grace the microphone, but he doesn’t shy away from blending with the crowd and taking the public transport. During one of his tours, circa 2012, Jay and his entourage traveled to the all-new Barclays Center in Brooklyn through the New York subway where he chatted with 67-year-old Ellen Grossman. After the video of their interaction stormed the internet, Grossman also sprung to fame.
While it may be common for celebrities to own a private plane, there’s something special about Drake’s Boeing 767. As Evening Standard reported, the Scorpio hitmaker named the private jet “Air Drake.” and it was valued at at least $190 million. However, that wasn’t the case in 2014, as Drake’s presence once caused “chaos” at London’s Heathrow Airport.
7 Keanu Reeves
It’s not exaggerating to call Keanu Reeves our favorite internet boyfriend. Even so, the Matrix star’s multi-million status as a celebrity has never prevented him from being a total sweetheart off the screen. Reeves is well-known for living a down-to-earth lifestyle and has been spotted on public transportation multiple times. In a viral clip circa 2011, the actor was spotted at the NYC subway where he offered his seat to a passenger who was carrying a large bag.
6 Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield shot to stardom thanks to his works in the Spider-Man franchise. He further elevated his career with the historical drama Hacksaw Ridge, which landed him his first nomination from the Academy Awards. However, in 2013, the Cali actor was spotted in the New York subway enjoying the public ride like a regular person with a pair of Beats headphones and a cup of coffee in his hand.
5 Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker loves public transportation. In fact, there have been numerous occasions where the Sex and the City star was spotted in the subway.
“Just taking the subway every day, I think, ‘My God, can’t we do this better, everybody?’ There is a sort of drumbeat that’s relentless here in New York. But I still love it,” she once told Vulture.
4 Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran’s story of success is an inspiring one. In a matter of years, the British singer went from a Britannia High reject to a singer with the number-one highest world tour in the world. However, in 2013, a fan on Twitter spotted Sheeran casually riding the New York City subway to his own show during the x album era.
3 J. Cole
J. Cole came from a humble beginning in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After years of creating buzz for himself by releasing back-to-back mixtapes, the rapper joined Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label in 2009. He may now be hailed as one of the most influential rappers of this generation, but that doesn’t stop him from remaining humble. Simply sporting a white t-shirt and jeans, you can spot the rapper on a bus in Queens, New York.
2 Tom Hanks
Before taking a subway, Tom Hanks used to disguise himself to avoid the crazed crowd surrounding him. In 2015, he joined everyday New Yorkers, as he did his best to keep it low-key.
“Nobody looks at anybody on the subway. Occasionally someone might give you a thumbs-up, and you nod. But the city is magnificent as far as that brand of easy anonymity. You just fold right in,” he said.
1 Mariah Carey
Lastly, there’s pop diva Mariah Carey who took an underground voyage from a glamorous Fresh Air Fund gala in Manhattan back in 2014. Unlike most of these celebs who attempted to stay low-key during their trip, it’s not Mariah Carey if she doesn’t keep it extra. She rocked a glitzy blue dress that doesn’t really suit the orange seats of the New York subway.
