 October 23

by Carolina

Investing in a football club has become quite the trend of late, with multiple celebrities looking to get involved and cash in on the riches.

Someone who has made a lot of money during his career is Tyson Fury, and he’s set to add to his net worth in December when he takes on Derek Chisora. Fury is a regular in the Morecambe area, and unlike those who have gone for the cream at the top of the game, the boxer wants to throw ‘millions’ at his local club.

Fury has the chance to transform Morecambe and drastically alter their direction, and in doing so will join a list of celebrities that have turned their attention to football ownership. Here, Daily Star Sport take a look at seven other celebrities that have invested into the beautiful game.

The much loved comedy actor bought into MLS side Los Angeles FC back in 2016, with the American side now closing in on their first MLS Cup. They began their inaugural season in 2018, and have since won two Supporter’s Shields, but are now just two wins away from their first MLS Cup.

Ferrell teased with the idea of investing, but due to his jokey nature, many fans didn’t feel as though he was actually serious. But Ferrell is on the board, and attends games when possible.

“I don’t really have a side per se until LAFC get started and that will definitely be, obviously, my team,” Ferrell said when investing. “But I just enough watching the fact that it’s played all over the world. So many amazing players and so many top flight leagues. And hopefully MLS can be on par, eventually, with the European leagues.”

We all know about the success of Wrexham FC since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney got involved. And they’re looking to finally secure promotion to the football league this season.

They bought into the club in 2020, and have since been seen attending games and even celebrating at Wembley Stadium when they thought League Two status was confirmed. Some A-listers are jeered for not really getting involved with their business ventures, but the Hollywood pair have certainly slipped away from that stereotype.

“I love every second of hating it. @Wrexham_AFC is the greatest drug on earth,” Reynolds has since described his experience as owner and fan.

All right, all right, all right. Matthew McConaughey has since thrown his cowboy hat into the ring and has become a stakeholder in Texan MLS side Austin FC.

The newly founded MLS outfit has McConaughey on board, and have since formed a heated rivalry with Dallas FC. After completing their inaugural season in 2021, Austin are flying.

After a stunning season in 2022, Austin have closed in on MLS Cup success. They already look destined for glory, and McConaughey is loving what he’s seeing.

NBA great LeBron James became a stakeholder of Liverpool FC, although his share is only two percent. But he is still on the deeds, and is a big lover of the Reds.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward bought into Liverpool with his business partner Maverick Carter for $6.5million (£4.7m) in April 2011. His stock has since risen, and James has become the first active NBA player to become a billionaire.

James’ stake is now worth an estimated $90m (£71.6m), as his business decision has proved to be a shrewd one. But James won’t be happy with what he is seeing this season.

Little Mix favourite Jade Thirwall isn’t someone you may have expected to see on this list, but the X Factor sensation has given back to her local area. The well-known Geordie has invested in South Shields FC, being named honorary president in August 2020.

Although Newcastle United may have received a huge cash injection, Thirwall is backing small side South Shields, who play their football in the Northern Premier League. The seventh-tier side are flying in 2022, losing just one game in the 2022/23 season so far.

She is a proud patron of South Shields-based charity Cancer Connections and recently invested in her own bar, Arbeia, and nightclub, Industry, in the town. Thirlwall’s role of President at South Shields FC will see the singer help to increase the club’s profile on a national and international scale, further putting the town on the map.

Elton John is a lifelong Watford fan, and even became club chairman in 1976. The legendary singer has since stepped down from his role, but is now honorary life president at the Championship side.

John has since played many concerts at Vicarage Road, and still regularly gives speeches to the side in the dressing room. John appointed legendary boss Graham Taylor in 1977, and the pair took the club from the Fourth Division to the top flight in the years up to 1987

Watford has been “a huge part of my life,” in the words of John. “We’ve been on quite the journey together,” he said.
