McDonald’s Is Being Praised By Health Advocates for Making This Change

McDonald’s recently announced it would be getting rid of toxic PFAS chemicals from its packaging by 2025, and environmental advocates and health experts are applauding the chain’s decision. In fact, they are urging other national fast-food companies to follow the burger giant’s example and make the same pledge. The announcement by McDonald’s came after a study, conducted by environmental advocacy groups Toxic-Free Future and Mind the Store, found high levels of the PFAS toxin in food wrappers and containers used at some of the country’s biggest fast-food chains, including McDonald’s and Burger King. These chemicals in fast-food packaging can end up harming consumers’ health by leaching into the food, and will ultimately harm the environment by polluting the soil after the packaging is discarded. (Related: McDonald’s Is Making These 8 Major Upgrades.)McDonald’s was the first large national chain to spring into action and promise to phase out the packaging containing the man-made toxins.”We’re proud to take another step in our product stewardship journey with our commitment to remove all added fluorinated compounds from our guest packaging materials globally by 2025,” the company said in its announcement.Danielle Melgar, an advocate for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, told Public News Service the benefit of having McDonald’s on board with the toxin phase-out mission is twofold.”As the largest burger chain in the world, this commitment matters for two reasons,” Melgar contended. “First, that’s just a lot of packaging that will be PFAS-free by 2025. And second, this may help move other companies to make similar commitments.”However, some still think McDonald’s could do better. Mind the Store campaign director Mike Schade said the chain should work to phase out PFAS faster.”Four years is far too long for their customers and frontline communities to continue to be polluted by these unnecessary forever chemicals,” he says. “We urge McDonald’s to phase these chemicals out by 2022 and ensure substitutes are safe and reusable. Other major fast-food chains like Burger King and Wendy’s should join them in driving PFAS out of food packaging.”For more, check out 5 New Menu Items McDonald’s Is Releasing This Year, and don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.

Dr. Fauci Calls This Your “Best Defense” Against COVID

Although coronavirus cases are going down nationwide, many experts are warning against letting your guard down, just as some cities reduce restrictions. This puts the onus on you to avoid the new COVID-19 variants, which have proven to be more transmissible, and possibly more deadly. The UK variant may be the US’s dominant strain by the end of next month. “That’s the sobering news,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, at yesterday’s White House COVID-19 Response Team Briefing. Read on for his advice about the “best defense” against COVID—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had Coronavirus. Dr. Fauci Says the “Best Defense” Against COVID is to Get Vaccinated and Follow the Public Health MeasuresAt the briefing, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was the first to issue a warning. “I’m asking everyone to please keep your guard up. The continued proliferation of variants remains of great concern and is a threat that could reverse the recent trends, positive trends we are seeing,” she said. “Please continue to wear a mask and stay a six feet apart from people you don’t live with, avoid travels, crowds, and poorly ventilated spaces and get vaccinated when it’s available to you. I recognize that the pandemic has taken an enormous toll on all of us, but if we all work together and take these prevention steps, we can finally turn the tide.”Dr. Fauci echoed these words. “Underscoring what Dr. Walensky just said, the two things that we can do is make sure we adhere to the public health measures,” he said. Additionally, we need to “get as many people vaccinated as quickly as we possibly can. That’s the best defense against the evolution of variants.””I think in the words of Dr. Walensky and the CDC now is not the time to be traveling if at all possible,” added Andy Slavitt, Senior Advisor to the White House COVID-19 Response Team.RELATED: If You Feel This, You May Have Already Had COVID, Says Dr. FauciYou Must Take Steps Beyond Vaccination, Say ExpertsOther experts agree with Fauci and Walensky. “It is absolutely essential that we continue to do steps beyond vaccination to keep this under control,” Dr. Richard Besser, former acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told CNN. “The reason for that is, that the more this virus is allowed to spread in our communities, the more we’re going to see these variants spreading.””And if the vaccines aren’t as effective against some of these variants, then we could see the gains that we’re so excited about right now, we could see those reversed in a very short amount of time.”So follow Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this surge, no matter where you live—wear a face mask, social distance, avoid large crowds, don’t go indoors with people you’re not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don’t visit any of these 35 Places You’re Most Likely to Catch COVID.

Dr. Fauci Just Said When We Can Stop Wearing Masks

For nearly a year, face masks have been a normal part of life around the world during the coronavirus pandemic. Just a few months in, health experts endorsed protective face coverings as an effective way to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. But now that a vaccine is here and the number of infections is on the decline, many people are starting to wonder when life will start returning to normal—or a new normal at least—and wearing a mask in public won’t be crucial. In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, revealed when he predicts we can stop wearing masks. Read on to find out when that is—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had Coronavirus. Dr. Fauci Said Mask Wearing is Dependent on the “Level of the Virus in the Community”Dr. Fauci explained that he can’t give a definitive answer as to exactly when masks will be a thing of the past, because it “will really be dependent upon how we get the level of virus in the community down.” “If we can get, and I have used this as an estimate, it’s not definitive, if we can get 70 to 85% of the population vaccinated and get to what we would hope would be to a degree or herd immunity—which really is an umbrella or a veil of protection against the community where the level of virus is so low, it’s not a threat at all—then at that point, you could start thinking in terms of not having to have a uniform wearing of mask,” Dr. Fauci explained. “But we’re certainly not near there yet.” As for timing, he predicts it could happen sometime this year. “You know, it’s very difficult to predict but if everything falls into the right place and we get this under control, it is conceivable that you might be able to pull back a bit on some of the public health measures as we get into the late fall of this year,” he revealed. “But there’s no guarantee of that because if we don’t get the overwhelming of this still going to be a considerable amount of virus in the community. And as long as that’s the case, people are going to have to wear masks.”RELATED: 7 Tips You Must Follow to Avoid COVID, Say DoctorsHow to Stay Safe Until We Return to “Normal”So follow Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this surge, no matter where you live—wear a face mask, social distance, avoid large crowds, don’t go indoors with people you’re not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don’t visit any of these 35 Places You’re Most Likely to Catch COVID.
