Prince Harry is ‘invested’ in US culture and politics says expert

Graham Smith told Express.co.uk Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not prepared to follow the UK Government’s expectation that members of the Royal Family keep their opinions to themselves. Mr Smith is the CEO of Republic, an organisation that campaigns for the Queen to be replaced by an elected, democratic head of state and the monarchy to be abolished.

Mr Smith said: “It is very clear that they wanted to be celebrities and they wanted to do it on their own terms.

“They were not prepared to do things that the public and the Government expected of them such as keeping their opinions to themselves.

“They were not prepared to put up with the sort of criticism that they have got.

“They wanted the life of a carefully managed celebrity rather than a royal who is, even in a less than ideal way, open to scrutiny and challenge.”

The CEO of Republic also stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will struggle to keep people interested in them as their “claim to fame” of being royal begins to fade.

Mr Smtih said: “I think Meghan and Harry are very clearly desperate to stay in the spotlight.

“They want to do it on their own terms, in their own way.

“The problem is that their only claim to fame is having been royals.

“Because they walked away from that the interest in them is going to wane over the next few years.”

However, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams disagreed with this view.

Mr Fitzwillliams told Express.co.uk: “This is seeing Harry and Meghan from a parochial point of view.

“They are concentrating on a future in America whilst keeping some British patronages and a Commonwealth role.

“However, they are of course no longer senior working royals and have a deal with Netflix, with a public speaking agency and they want to launch their non-profit charitable foundation Archewell when the pandemic permits.”

The royal commentator added: “Where I disagree fundamentally is that interest in them will wane, it certainly won’t globally or in the United States.

“As Graham admits, it is because they are royal that there is the fascination in the first place, we know how they detest media intrusion but it is there because readers are interested.

“They have global reach and this will continue.”
