I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here will be coming to the US, again, but this time the format will be a little different to the tried-and-tested version we see here in the UK.
Originally reported by Deadline, ITV America and Blumhouse Television are teaming up to pitch Celebrity Castle, an unscripted series that will be based on the UK version but steeped in horror instead.
If the show is picked up, the two companies will co-produce the show together.
The new format was inspired by the 2020 and upcoming 2021 series of I’m a Celeb, which sees the ITV show swap the Australian jungle for a castle in Wales due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the idea of basing it in a castle a good way of increasing the horror factor.
Blumhouse Television is known for its many horror films, and are adept at creating a scary environment. They will combine that skill with ITV America’s reality show experience, having most recently produced Love Island USA.
This is not the first time I’m a Celeb has been seen in the US, having been produced by ABC and NBC in the 2000s. The ABC version only aired for one season in 2003 and was filmed in Australia, featuring celebrities such as Melissa Rivers, Caitlyn Jenner and Tyson Beckford.
The NBC version aired in 2009 and was shot in Costa Rica with celebrities like Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Janice Dickinson and Stephen Baldwin.
The UK version of I’m a Celeb sees celebrities put into the wild and forced to take on a series of challenges, often involving facing fears and lots of creepy crawlies.
The two companies are hoping that a scarier version of the long-running show will attract more interest for U.S audiences. There is no further information about the show, as it is still in early development stages.
I’m a Celebrity is due to return later this year on ITV.
