An essential part of every Indian household, nicknames are often cringey, sometimes cute, and seldom relevant. Most times, they are keepsakes from our childhood, a mark of identity given to us by close friends or family that sticks for life, and Bollywood celebrities are no exception. From Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Kaka’ to Taimur Ali Khan’s ‘Tim,’ this age-old tradition seems to crop up in every generation. But in the long list of celebrity nicknames, Bebo a.k.a Kareena Kapoor Khan and Lolo a.k.a Karisma Kapoor seem to be the ones that stand out most. Here’s our list of lesser-known celebrity nicknames that you may or may not know, but will definitely want to keep in mind if you are an avid Bollywood fan.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Gullu

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s nickname contrasts her elegant persona. The star’s sister-in-law, Shrima Rai, revealed on her Instagram stories that Rai Bachchan’s stardom is never a topic at home, and that she is fondly known as ‘Gullu maami’ to her two nephews.

Alia Bhatt – Aloo

In an interview, Alia Bhatt revealed that she was nicknamed ‘Aloo’ by her friends when she was just a child. Besides being a shorter version of her name, Bhatt credits this nickname to the fact that she was a chubby kid.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas – Mimi

Famously referred to as ‘PC’ or ‘Piggy Chops’ by Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s childhood nickname is not as widely known. The actor’s family called her ‘Mithu’ as a toddler, but since a young Chopra Jonas couldn’t pronounce the name given to her, it eventually became Mimi. The multi-hyphenate’s new NYC restaurant Sona even has a private dining area called ‘Mimi’s’.

Anushka Sharma – Nushki

Anushka Sharma’s family loving christened her ‘Nusheshwar,’ which her husband Virat Kohli tweaked to ‘Nushki.’ Kohli revealed this nickname in a chat show with Aamir Khan back in 2017, when he said “Nushki is super honest.”

Varun Dhawan – Pappu

Varun Dhawan’s father fondly calls him ‘Pappu,’ which the actor said, during the promotions of Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania (2014), reminds him of a Mexican drug lord. Mexican drug lord or not, this Pappu can dance.

Hrithik Roshan – Duggu

Hrithik Roshan is famously known as ‘Duggu,’ a nickname given to him by his grandmother. The name is a play on his father Rakesh Roshan’s nickname, ‘Guddu.’

Shahid Kapoor – Sasha

Shahid Kapoor is called ‘Sasha’ by his close friends and family, but wife Mira Rajput Kapoor has a variety of nicknames for the star, ranging from ‘Shadoo’ to ‘Tommy,’ his on-screen name in the movie Udta Punjab (2016).

Akshay Kumar – Raju

Fans of Akshay Kumar are aware of the actor’s real name, Rajiv Bhatia. Close friends and family often refer to him as ‘Raju,’ which is short for Rajiv.

Ranbir Kapoor – Raymond

Rishi Kapoor hated his nickname ‘Chintu’, and decided to spare his children the embarrassment. However, Neetu Kapoor stepped in with ‘Raymond’ as a nickname for her son Ranbir Kapoor, as she thinks of him as a ‘complete man,’ proving that she is an out-and-out Indian mother.

Arjun Kapoor – Fubu

There’s no dearth of interesting nicknames in the Kapoor family, from Anil Kapoor’s ‘Lakkhan’ to Sonam Kapoor’s ‘Giraffe.’ Arjun Kapoor was nicknamed ‘Fubu’ by his friends as a reference to the sportswear brand which offered clothes in larger sizes. Kapoor said that it was one of the only brands which made football jerseys that he could fit into as a chubby teen.
