f you don’t already know the name Chris Appleton, you’re probably familiar with his work.
The celebrity hairstylist counts Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and Shay Mitchell among his loyal clientele. Remember J.Lo’s now iconic hair-raising waist-length curls at the Superbowl halftime show? Yeah, that was Chris.
After a tough year for our locks with salons shut and the disastrous side effects of self-hairdressing, the Leicester-born, LA star is here to save your tresses with his new collaboration with Color Wow.
The first in the line of many (we hope), the Money masque is designed to give instant nourishment and just the right amount of texture so hair is healthy but not too soft to style. For all hair types, it has never been easier to achieve Appleton’s signature aesthetic – fresh, bouncy and always show-pony beautiful.
We caught up with Chris to discuss his favourite looks, the product he can’t live without and the post-pandemic future of the industry.
What does 2021 look like at present for you?
To me, 2021 looks like a time of change. We’ve been through a huge change with what’s happened with COVID and I think we’ve all come out of this learning something about ourselves. Whether that’s the lifestyle we want to live, or how we want to live it, I think we’ve all changed by what we’ve just experienced. I’m really excited to hopefully return to some normality and to start seeing some events happen again and just getting back into a momentum. 2021 looks bright!
How has the industry changed through the pandemic?
The industry has been massively affected by the pandemic, especially salons. They have been hit so hard and a lot of people have been out of work for such a long time.
However, they’ll always be a need for hairstylists, as people are always going to want good hair. I’m hoping 2021 will feel different with the salons re-opening; I’m sure people have missed having their hair done and are excited to change their look or freshen it up.
What is your favourite look to create?
One of my favourite looks to create is gorgeous, rich, and glamorous looking hair. I like all types of hairstyles and textures, but one of my favourites is J.Lo’s Superbowl look, just because it was so iconic. When she danced, the hair danced with her – it was a real moment. And the Superbowl made it feel very special.
Talk us through your personal grooming routine
I like to use the SKINMEDICA skincare range. I usually start with the Pigment Cream, which evens out the pigment of your skin. I also use their Hydrating Moisturiser and Eye Cream. I actually started to use Bio Oil on my body recently, because living in Los Angeles my skin gets quite dry. When I get out the shower, I apply Bio Oil and it leaves my skin feeling very hydrated.
For facial wash, I use Clean & Clear, because I can breakout sometimes, especially with my job. Using and wearing a lot of hairstyling products can make my face feel greasy and with having facial hair, I just like to keep my skin clean.
What’s the one item you can’t live without?
My fragrance, just because I’ve become so well-known for it. I’m constantly being stopped as asked what it is. Nassomatto Black Afgano is a little bottle of magic and it’s kind of become my signature scent.
How do you incorporate time for yourself into your schedule?
My time for myself is in the gym. I work out because I want to look good, but more than that, it makes me feel more in control and it makes me feel stronger mentally. It really is my one hour a day where I get to have time to myself, so I try to stick to a strict regime, because it just makes me feel so much better.
What’s your favourite guilt-free pandemic purchase?
Probably an at-home gym, just because I kind of had to with all the gyms being closed and I needed to find a way to workout.
What hair product should we be adding to our routine with our spare time?
The MONEY Hair Masque, which is my hair new product for rich, luxurious looking hair. It’s super hydrating, strengthening and gives you that money shot.
What’s the one thing you wish people would stop doing to their hair in lockdown?
Cutting layers. Trimming bangs is one thing, but cutting layers is another story!
Which beauty product do you wish you invented?
Can you give us any clues as to what is coming next with your Color Wow collaboration?
BIG THINGS. That’s all I can say…
