General Motors is promoting its Super Cruise semi-autonomous technology with a new digital advertisement that shows a number of different celebrities reacting to the hands-free system’s capabilities.
The advertisement includes appearances from Sofia Vergara and her husband Joe Manganiello, The Jonas Brothers, Tiffany Haddish and younger brother Justin, and dancers Stephen Boss and Allison Holker Boss. The celebs are seen getting behind the wheel of a Super Cruise-equipped 2021 Cadillac Escalade before testing the system out on a busy Los Angeles freeway. Most of the celebrities are a bit intimidated to use the hands-free system at first (especially Vergara), but they eventually put their trust in it and warm up to its capabilities. We imagine this is how most folks will approach advanced semi-autonomous driving technology, or at least until it becomes more widespread and mainstream.
The version of Super Cruise that is found in the 2021 Escalade also allows for automated lane-change maneuvers, which a couple of the celebrities demonstrate. To toggle an automated lane-change maneuver, all the user has to do is press the indicator stock to signal which lane they’d like to enter. The vehicle will then automatically move into one of the adjacent lanes and turn off the turn signal.
Super Cruise uses an array of exterior cameras and LiDar along with GPS information and radar sensors to automatically steer and brake during highway driving. An interior cabin-facing camera also monitors the driver’s face and will automatically disengage if they are not paying attention, allowing them to take their hands off the wheel. The system has 200,000 miles of North American highways in its memory, with GM planning to add more roadways to it through over-the-air updates in the coming years.
