Have you ever wondered which celebrities have grown up in the same area as you?

Our very own Berkshire is surprisingly home to countless people who have gone on to make a name for themselves that you could have been living right next door to.

They’ve become famous in a whole range of fields and have become household celebrity names since finding fame.

The list of celebs who took their baby steps in Berkshire ranges from actors to singers to comedians and a whole host of others.

But their success wasn’t overnight. They, just like regular folks, started somewhere before their careers catapulted to stardom and what many people don’t know is what they did before they got their big break.

Here’s the humble beginnings of some of Berkshire’s biggest names did before they became household names.

Natalie Dormer

Loads of people will know Natalie from her starring role as Margaery Tyrell in the popular TV series Game of Thrones.

But you probably were unaware of the fact that she was born in Reading in February, 1982.

Before she had her breakout moment in Game of Thrones and received worldwide recognition and praise, she starred in several films after graduating such as Casanova as well as playing Anne Boleyn in The Tudors.

Kate is also a Reading native having been born in the town in 1975.

She shot to fame through her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic in which she acted alongside Leonardo di Caprio.

However, prior to starring in a movie with Leo, a young Kate Winslet was one of 175 girls who auditioned for Peter Jackson’s 1994 film, Heavenly Creatures.

Many probably didn’t know this but she played a teenager called Juliet Hulme who helps her friend Pauline Walker whose mother gets murdered.

Justin Fletcher

Justin Fletcher

Kids who grew up in the 90s will recognise Justin Fletcher’s face and voice.

Born in Reading in 1970, he was the star of the CBeebies show Mr Tumble as well playing the voice of Shaun in Shaun the Sheep.

Before all of this, he worked in Theale as a cassette duplicating machine operator.

Ricky Gervais


Ricky Gervais was born in Reading and is one of the most recognisable and famous comedians in Britain.

The award-winning comedian has done stand up tours and been a part of many films including Spy Kids: All the Time in the World and Ghost Town in 2008.

But before he got a reputation of being a funny man, he was a singer.

In his last year at university, he formed a pop duo called Seona Dancing with his friend Bill Macrae.

London Records signed them and released two songs of theirs called “More to Lose” and “Bitter Heart”

She’s arguably Bracknell’s most famous daughter and is best known for playing Tracey Beaker on CBBC.

Before she caused chaos in the dumping ground, she first appeared in a musical called “The Who’s Tommy” at six years old.

She also played roles in various pantomimes such as Snow White, Peter Pan and Cinderella.

A new Tracy Beaker show has just started starring Harmer and Twitter has become obsessed.

Will Young

Will Young

Will Young

Will was born in Wokingham to a middle-class family and studied politics at the University of Exeter.

The singer of ‘Leave Right Now’ has won many awards during his illustrious career and has even ventured into movies.

But before he was tearing it up in the UK music scene, he did other work such as being a waiter, working in a clothing factory, gardening as well as modelling for runway and photos.
