Whether we want to admit it or not, we all have things that scare us. While some things might not seem too scary to others, might be terrifying to us. Sometimes fear is unexplainable — it might be something instilled in us a birth, or by experiencing something first hand. Either way, we all have our fears not matter how big or how small they may be. The same goes for celebrities and their fears.

Being rich and famous doesn’t take away fear. There are plenty 0f celebrities out there who have a phobia, no matter how ridiculous it may be. For many people, not just celebrities, flying in and airplane has become an issue. Some are so scared that they’ll never ever step foot inside a plane whether they have some place to be or not. Fear of flying is a pretty common one, and you’d be surprised to find out just how many celebrities stay far away from an airplane as possible.

10 Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has a huge fear of flying, and for a good reason too. In celebration of her 50th birthday, Jennifer and some friends went on vacation together in Mexico. While in the air on a private plane, the pilot asked to speak with Jennifer, letting her know that there were parts of their landing gear back at the airport and that they blew a tire and were forced to make an emergency landing. After that incident, that really ignited Jennifer’s fear of flying, and she’s been hesitant to do so ever since.

9 Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock is another celebrity who had a traumatic event happen while they were flying, causing their fear. Back in 2000, Sandra was actually in a small plane crazy in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Thankfully the crash wasn’t extreme, and they were able to manage a safe landing, and Sandra was fine. Since that small crash, though, Sandra developed a fear of flying and we honestly don’t blame her. Being in an accident no matter how severe is terrifying. She has flown since then, but she isn’t as comfortable as she used to be.

8 William Shatner

You’d think that William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in Star Trek would be the last person to be afraid of flying. Believe it or not, he has a huge fear and because of it, he turned down the opportunity of a lifetime. He received an invitation to fly on Virgin Galactic into space and to be one of the first celebrities to do so. Unfortunately, because of his intense fear of flying, he had to turn it down. He joked around, saying that the only way he would ever actually launch himself into space was if he was paid an insane amount of money.

7 Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck is yet another celebrity who is deathly afraid of flying. Ben has been afraid of flying since he was a little boy, just 9 years old. At the time, he was flying on a plane when the one he was on caught on fire mid-air, mid-flight. To make things even worse, he was flying from Boston to Washington DC unaccompanied when this whole thing happened. While he was on the plane, the entire thing was stuck by lightning. As a child flying alone, that had to be pretty scary, and it only makes sense that he has a huge fear of flying as an adult.

6 Sean Bean

Sean Bean, who played the role of Boromir in The Lord Of The Rings had a hard time filming since he has a huge fear of flying. While filming on location in New Zealand, he refused to use helicopters to get up the mountain since he was so afraid. That made things more difficult for him as he had to walk everywhere.

While his co-stars were comfortably flown in the helicopters up the mountains, Sean chose to walk and climb up the mountains himself. As a result, they had to wait for him to trek up the mountain before they could start filming. Sean blames his parents for his fear of flying as they were the exact same way, and it rubbed off on him.

5 Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is yet another celeb who is extremely afraid of flying. He’s had his fear of flying for as long as he can remember, and it’s created quite a few problems when it comes time to travel for work. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t travel, though. In fact, he has figured out a number of ways to get to where he needs to be. He travels by car whenever he can, and for further travel, he’ll even use trains. When he needs to go to Europe, he’ll get there by boat — anything to not have to travel by plane.

4 Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg also has a huge fear of flying. When she was living in San Diego she was sitting out on her balcony where she witnessed a horrific accident where there was a mid-air collision, and Whoopi, unfortunately, had to witness the whole thing. because of this, she developed an insane fear of flying. Despite the fact that she had this huge fear, she wanted to overcome it so badly.

As a result she enrolled in Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Without Fear program as well as using the technique of Thought Filed Therapy to help herself. Her first flight she chartered a private jet and took her doctor along with her. She still continues to work on her fear today.

3 Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet is yet another celebrity who has that awful fear of flying — so much so that she and her ex-husband Sam Mendes used to avoid flying together because she was afraid of them crashing and leaving their kids without parents. Her real fear began when Sam was supposed to fly on one of the planes that were hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. Luckily, last minute he didn’t get on the airplane, a decision that would obviously save his life. Not long after, Kate was on a flight where a man tried to hijack the plane, and they had to make an emergency landing. As a result, flying became terrifying for Kate.

2 Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin was one talented lady. One thing that scared her, though, was flying. Back in 1984, she was on a small airplane where they encountered a lot of turbulence which really freaked her out. As a result, she refused to fly anywhere, no matter what. Regardless of her fears, she still had to travel and play shows, so she traveled wherever she could in a custom-made bus. Unfortunately, her fear did hold her back a lot and prevented her from going to some places further away. Nevertheless she made it work, and she sadly never got over her fear of flying.

1 Travis Barker

Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker is absolutely terrified of flying, but he has a good reason for it. The last time he was on a plane was back in 2008. The airplane wound up crashing, and everyone on the plane die except him and his best friend, DJ AM. Being the two lone survivors, they both suffered from survivor’s guilt, and has a tough time overcoming things emotionally and psychologically. To make things worse, DJ AM passed away a year later from a drug overdose, leaving Travis to truly be the lone survivor. Travis had to not only deal with survivor’s guilt, but also had PTSD, and had to endure months of therapy to help him. These days he’s trying to work on his fear of flying, recognizing how much of a freak accident everything was.
